Functions, graphs and transformations
What you’ll learn
- Sketch polynomial and reciprocal graphs using key features.
- Describe translations, stretches and reflections of a graph.
Understand the idea
A useful sketch records intercepts, turning behaviour, asymptotes and the end behaviour. Factorised polynomials make the roots visible: a simple root usually crosses the axis, whereas an even repeated root touches it. The reciprocal curves and exclude and approach coordinate-axis asymptotes.
Changes outside act on output coordinates, so multiplies heights by and moves heights by . Changes inside act on input coordinates inversely: shifts left by , and divides horizontal coordinates by . A negative scale also reflects the graph.
An intersection of and satisfies . Use algebra to locate exact intersections and a sketch to check how many solutions are reasonable.
Key formulae
Conditions. Compare f(x) = x² with f(x − 2) = (x − 2)² on −2 ≤ x ≤ 4. Both use the same axis scale and are exact dimensionless curves.
x / dimensionless; y / dimensionless.
The original vertex (0,0) moves to (2,0). The minus sign inside the function means a shift right: to obtain the original input u, the new coordinate must solve x − 2 = u.

Worked example
The point lies on . Find its corresponding point on .
- The input changes from to .
- To keep the original input , solve .

Answer: The corresponding point is , a translation 4 units right.
