Hyperbolic functions and their inverses
What you’ll learn
Use exponential definitions and hyperbolic identities.
Solve hyperbolic equations and recognise inverse domains.
Understand the idea
Hyperbolic sine and cosine are built from exponentials. The function is odd and increasing, whereas is even with minimum value . Define and the reciprocal functions , and by taking reciprocals of , and .
To solve an equation involving hyperbolic functions, exponential definitions often turn it into a quadratic in , which must be positive. The inverse is defined for all real inputs; uses inputs at least and returns a non-negative value; requires .
Key formulae
Cosh is even while sinh is odd
Conditions. Exact definitions sinh x =(eˣ−e⁻ˣ)/2 and cosh x =(eˣ+e⁻ˣ)/2 on −2≤x≤2. No periodicity is assumed.
x / dimensionless; Function value / dimensionless.
At zero, sinh 0=0 and cosh 0=1. Cosh is symmetric about the vertical axis and has minimum 1; sinh changes sign under x→−x. They satisfy cosh²x−sinh²x=1, rather than a sum-of-squares circular identity.
