Plant antimicrobial evidence and safe interpretation
What you’ll learn
- Interpret supplied inhibition-zone data using an appropriate control.
- Distinguish evidence of growth inhibition from claims about clinical usefulness.
Understand the idea
Core practical 9 considers antimicrobial properties of plants and the purpose of aseptic practice. Here the evidence is supplied as images or measurements from approved classroom work. A clear zone around a treated disc indicates reduced visible growth under those assay conditions. A solvent-only disc checks whether the carrier itself causes inhibition. Use the stated convention for zone diameter: some datasets include the disc, while others report only a clear margin.
A larger zone may reflect stronger inhibition, but also different diffusion, solubility or the amount of substance reaching the surrounding material. Standardised comparisons require the same disc size, carrier and measurement rule, with independent replicates. A clear zone does not on its own distinguish killing from temporary growth inhibition, identify the active molecule or show that a plant extract would be safe and effective in people.
Aseptic practice aims to prevent contamination of the material and exposure of people or the environment. Microbiology work uses only institution-approved material under trained supervision, with the school's handling and disposal arrangements. Unknown environmental samples and pathogenic cultures are not part of this lesson; the questions analyse completed records without providing growth conditions or culturing instructions.
Key formulae
Worked example
A supplied image shows a circular total inhibition-zone diameter of , including a disc. The solvent control has no clear area beyond its disc. Calculate the clear area outside the treated disc and state a limited conclusion.
- The outer radius is and the disc radius is .
- The clear annulus has area .
- The extract is associated with inhibition beyond that seen for the solvent under these conditions; the result does not establish a medical treatment.
Answer: About of clear area beyond the disc, supporting inhibition in this assay.
